PCB layer count is selected by routing density, signal integrity, grounding, board size, connector placement and long-term production requirements.

2 Layer

Simple routing

Two-layer PCB works for simple circuits with moderate routing density and basic power requirements.

4 Layer

Improved power and signal layout

Four-layer PCB supports cleaner reference planes, compact routing and better EMI control than simple two-layer layouts.

Multilayer

Dense electronics

Higher layer counts are used for HDI, controlled impedance, BGA routing and complex industrial or communication products.
